In its final weekend at Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Harman Hall (610 F St NW, Washington, D.C.), “Othello” and its titular lead Wendell Pierce are still gripping audiences and commanding standing ovations. The critically-acclaimed play opened on May 27 and was extended through June 28 due to popular demand. Age-gap dating app Fox Hunters Club gave away two front-row seats to the sold-out June 26 performance as part of its “Summer of Love” DMV promotion, and Jermira Sarratt was the fortuitous winner. In a passionate review, Sarratt described her “amazing” experience.

“This was my first time seeing Wendell Pierce perform live, and he completely exceeded my expectations,” she told Brownie Marie, Fox Hunters Club founder. “His portrayal of Othello was captivating. Being that close to the stage, I could see every expression, every moment of hesitation, and every emotion on his face. He brought so much depth and humanity to the role that I found myself completely drawn into his journey. You could feel the weight of Othello’s love, trust, heartbreak, and eventual unraveling.

“The entire cast delivered strong performances, but Wendell Pierce commanded the stage without ever overshadowing the other actors. The chemistry between the cast made the story even more compelling, and the intimate staging made it easy to forget you were watching a performance— it felt like you were witnessing real lives unfold in front of you.

“I’ve seen film and other stage productions of ‘Othello’ before but experiencing it last night is now my favorite adaptation of the play. Hearing Shakespeare’s words spoken with such conviction and emotion as in today’s version gave me a new appreciation for the play.

“By the final scene, the audience was completely silent, hanging on every word. When the play ended, the standing ovation was well deserved. It was an unforgettable evening of theater, and I’m so glad my first experience seeing Wendell Pierce on stage was in such a powerful production. I would highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates outstanding acting and great storytelling.”

There are two tickets remaining for the 2 p.m. performance of “Othello” on June 28, and the 7:30 p.m. performance is sold out. For more information, please visit ShakespeareTheatre.org.
